Dusting 'Em Off: Lush ' Lovelife

Lush's third and final album, Lovelife, turns 16 this year. A sixteenth birthday is admittedly an unusual time to revisit an album, as tradition dictates that such occasions be reserved for anniversaries divisible by five, but Lovelife is one of those albums that has and will likely continue to remain uncelebrated and forgotten on its milestone anniversaries. Sure, Lush still retains a dedicated, loyal following and continues to gain new fans, but how often do they appear in critics' 'top albums and songs of the '90s' lists? Not often enough.

One of the guarantees in the world of music journalism is that any discussion of the history and relevance of shoegaze will inevitably focus on how Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain pioneered the shimmering style, while My Bloody Valentine perfected it. Sometimes, Slowdive and Ride will be included, but Lush will likely earn a passing reference at best. Despite generally positive reviews and a commercial viability that found the London quartet playing television shows everywhere and successfully touring American cities other British bands of the '90s never dared to tread, Lush has seemingly been forgotten or omitted for consideration as one of the shoegaze greats. This diminished legacy is at least partly because Lovelife is when Lush allegedly 'went pop.'

'Ladykillers' opens Lovelife with an attention-seizing circular melody and spunky vocals from Miki Berenyi that are no longer floating along in a sea of reverb. Confidently at the forefront, Berenyi eviscerates Anthony Kiedis, Matt Sharp, and men with transparent agendas and dubious attitudes towards women everywhere with an infectiously sarcastic wit. It's what would have been hyped as a girl power anthem had it been released a couple years later.

Driving the point home that Lush is too confident and extroverted to be content with ethereal drifting and effects pedal-fixating are spirited power pop anthems 'Heavenly Nobodies' and chart hit 'Single Girl'. The sublimely sweet '500' is probably the finest ode to a car of the era and a bona fide 90's staple. Pulp hero Jarvis Cocker guests on 'Ciao!', which is enough to make the song a fascinating novelty at the very least. Here, Cocker and Berenyi channel Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood as they go back and forth, each one-upping the other's 'I'm so much better off without you, so fuck you' sentiment. This death-of-a-relationship celebration is a potent anti-love song that's especially cathartic for anyone who's ever needed convincing that they were more over a former flame than they actually were.

Aside from the earworms, Lush is still in touch with their roots on Lovelife. 'Tralala' and 'Last Night' capture that haunting, dreamy ambience that made the arrangements on Spooky so stellar, while enveloping it with layers of mystery and trippy sensuality. Yet, the general consensus is that Lush ran away from shoegaze in favor of Britpop on Lovelife.

Since shoegaze and dream pop had been on the decline for a few years, some critics and fans have dismissed Lovelife as a case of bandwagon-jumping. In the mid-90's, the infamous war between Oasis and Blur dominated the media and the charts, Pulp achieved superstar status after a legendary headlining performance at Glastonbury, Ocean Color Scene, The Boo Radleys, and other second-generation acts of the scene were on the rise. In short, it was the peak of Britpop. Although Lush never set out to make a such a record, its touch persists throughout the album. As the dominant style of the time, it was inevitably going to serve as one of the largest wells of non-retro influence for a forward-seeking band to draw upon. Even if they had deliberately shifted gears to fit the times, is that so wrong? M83 has been increasingly dialing back the shoegaze stylings and scored a crossover hit with 'Midnight City', yet there's nary an accusation of jumping onto the idealized-vision-of-the-'80s synthpop bandwagon, and such acts are hotter than ever. Rather, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is nearly universally acclaimed for its grand ambition.

Pulp got to ride the Britpop wave because they had some anthemic and unabashedly English tunes filled with hooks at exactly the right time. However, once they released the bleak, anti-catchy This Is Hardcore in 1998, it became apparent that their blend of glam, disco, and post-punk was always fundamentally different from the sound traditionally associated with the genre, such as that of Oasis, Supergrass, and Blur. The history of Lush parallels this rise and subsequent shattering of illusion. Yes, Lush's jangly sound on their debut album Spooky was brought to life in part by none other than producer Robin Guthrie, but even then the band clearly had a poppier side. Songs such as 'Superblast!' and Split's 'Hypocrite' are as purely pop as any of the singles from Lovelife. The fact that the band's sound shifted on Lovelife is indisputable, but it's just not that drastic of a change since Lush was always more than just a purely shoegaze outfit.

Back in 2010, Graham Bendel of The Quietus argued that Lush is not only just as deserving as My Bloody Valentine of shoegaze legend status, but that they are an even better band. One aspect of Lush that Bendel skipped in his compelling case is the significance of Lovelife. The understated legacy of Lush seems to signal the danger of turning away from shoegaze, yet artists that have been similarly labeled in recent years, such as M83, Asobi Seksu, and School of Seven Bells, continue to move on and evolve. Like My Bloody Valentine's failed, costly attempts to follow-up Loveless, the stylistic shift of Lush indicates that the genre is one in which an artist can sound fresh for a limited time only.

Would My Bloody Valentine still be held with the same mythical status had they followed-up Loveless with that reported jungle music experiment or 'gone pop?' It's doubtful. Perhaps what has changed over the past 16 years is that 'pop' is no longer considered such a dirty word. Rather than relegated to guilty pleasure status or dismissed as a symbol of artifice and pandering, the value of a good hook is more widely appreciated by even the most jaded of music consumers. Whether it's ethereal or anthemic, the sound of Lush is an irresistible one, and Lovelife deserves a reexamination.

Album Review: Billy Bragg & Wilco ' Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions

Image of Album Review: Billy Bragg & Wilco ' Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions
This year marks Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday, and our modern musicians have not let any commemorations fall by the wayside. The anniversary brings tribute concerts spread throughout the year, as well as new recordings by Guthrie's legion of fans. A recent example is this year's New Multitudes, a collaboration between Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames, which gives listeners the chance to hear previously unused lyrics by Guthrie, sung atop new music. The quartet ran a game plan similar to the one used by a former bandmate of Farrar's over a decade ago. And some Bloke from Essex.

Billy Bragg & Wilco's Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II are being re-issued, re-packaged, and ultimately melded together into a box set, with the added bonus of a documentary (Man in the Sand, highlighting the sessions) and the crème de le crème: Mermaid Avenue Vol. III, a 17-track album of its own featuring previously unreleased tracks. All these audio and visual discs combine to make Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions, an experience embracing both old and new.

The first Mermaid volume sounds as gorgeous as it did upon its initial release in 1998. Bragg and Tweedy trade off powerful vocals, while the rest of Wilco's musical input is just as important to the project's outcome. The Wilco material translates as more summery and shimmering (this was the Summerteeth-era) than Bragg's folk-rock take on most of the material, but just about every interpretation of Guthrie's lyrics reign supreme. 'California Stars' has become a live staple at Wilco shows; its easy sing-along breathed to life courtesy of the steady beat held by ex-Wilcoer, Ken Coomer. Bragg leads the way on the politically/romantically charged 'She Came Along to Me', and plays plaintive guitar as Natalie Merchant takes the vocals to 'Birds and Ships' (their duet, 'Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key' is another album highlight). Bragg and Tweedy's vocals don't cross paths often, but when they converge on the down-tempo album closer, 'The Unwelcome Guest', the marriage is worth the wait.

Vol. II falls short of its predecessor, but is not without merit. With prose based around faith, love, and, yes, politics, Guthrie's lyricism shines through any tension that may have been mounting between Bragg and the Wilco camp. It's impossible to frown upon 'Airline to Heaven', which like 'California Stars' gets massive replay at Wilco concerts. Wilco takes the Summerteeth approach with 'Secret of the Sea'; throwing everything but the kitchen sink, musically, atop the words but somehow comes out completely clean. The late Jay Bennett's fingerprints are blessedly all over the track, but leaves things be with the epic, acoustic-driven 'Remember the Mountain Bed'. Bragg's best contribution to this volume is the sing-along 'My Flying Saucer' with its lightning-fast guitar strums. But the Englishman's material pales in comparison to his stateside brothers this go 'round, although his colaboration with Merchant for 'I Was Born' is lovely.

Which brings us to Vol. III. Culled from the turn of the century sessions, a few tracks of the Bragg and Wilco tracks have production values that scream 'demo', and certain songs fade away rather than cut off, leaving one to gander a guess at how many of the songs are fully realized. Regardless, there are gems here, and the fact that someone else's ghost looms large makes it a must-buy. I'm sure they'll be some Wilco re-issues in a few years with unreleased material, but until that day exists we have some more contributions courtesy of Bennett. His piano and guitar play enhances the lilting 'That Lonesome Wind That Blows', and his organ lifts 'When the Roses Bloom Again'.

As for Bragg, he provides much of the material here, with the haunting, banjo-infused 'Man in the Sand' and picked-up finale 'Out to Get' leading the way. His weary vocals highlight the stripped-down lament of 'Jail Cell Blues', and 'Satisfied Blues' acts as a musical reinvention of his own 'The Man in the Iron Mask'. Bragg's new take of his old classic can be heard as an involuntary tribute: much of Guthrie is within him. With Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions, he's within us, too.

Essential Tracks: 'She Came Along to Me', 'Remember the Mountain Bed', and 'Out to Get'

Does It Offend You, Yeah? go on indefinite hiatus

British electo-rock quintet Does It Offend You, Yeah? took to their Facebook page on April 12th to say they were 'working on something exciting!' Thirteen days later, they posted a message stating they are 'now on hiatus for the foreseeable future.' My, how two weeks can change things.

'After five years touring the world, playing alongside some of our favourite bands and visiting some awesome countries we've decided to concentrate on other projects [sic],' the band posted. They elaborated, saying members James Rushent and Dan Coop 'are working on a new EP for a purely electronic project which we'll bring you news on soon.' They also promised to keep fans abreast of the rest of the band's going-ons. At the end of the hiatus announcement, they teased, 'We might do the odd very special gig if our schedules permit it.'

DIOYY released their debut record, You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into in 2008 and followed it up in 2011 with Don't Say We Didn't Warn You. They also toured with Nine Inch Nails, Bloc Party, and The Prodigy.

Below, watch the video for 'The Monkeys Are Coming' from their final LP.

'When the rainbow collapsed and the 4th dimension became overpopulated, the Siddhartha came glaring with love, and diamonds in the place of sinew and nails.' So begins the 'myth' of San Francisco psych-rockers Siddhartha (no stated relation to the '70s prog/art band), whose swirling guitars have coined a new genre, Dashiki Shoegaze. After forming the band in 2009, singer/songwriter Marlon Hauser recorded their debut EP, If It Die, while either homeless or living in a windowless apartment.

If It Die arrives May 1st via Neurotic Yell Records.

Video: Frank Ocean premieres new song at Coachella

At Coachella's second installation this past weekend, R&B crooner Frank Ocean not only nailed a rendition of 'American Wedding' and covered Lauryn Hill's 'Tell Him', he also premiered a new song rumored to be titled 'Forrest Gump' (he repeats it enough times over the course of the song for the rumor to most likely be true). Even though he said, 'IT WOULD BE THE WEEK THINGS GO WELL THAT THEY DON'T STREAM,' at least one enthusiastic fan of OFWGKTA's most soulful member videotaped all three songs. Dusting Em Off: Swans ' Children of God

Image of Dusting Em Off: Swans ' Children of God
With the release of Swans' 1987 masterpiece Children of God, many point to a noted change in the band's sound. I hesitate to call it a change in direction, but more of an evolution of Gira's vision. Any band worth its weight in salt is always going to push itself, continually challenging and evolving its sound. That is exactly what Michael Gira and Swans had been doing since their formation in the New York No Wave scene in 1982. Consistently present was the extreme heaviness, the sludge-paced tempos that make adagios feel like pop music, the distortion and detuned instruments and overall, the volume, the extreme volume.

As Swans evolved, all of that remained. The blueprint was well established; they were just expanding on the existing architecture. One such expansion, perhaps the most important in the band's entire history, was the addition of two highly influential new members: Algis Kizys as a second bass player and vocalist/keyboardist Jarboe La Salle Devereaux, or simply, Jarboe. When people mention the change in Swans' sound with Children of God, what they are in fact referring to is the expanded role that Jarboe took on this album.

Jarboe first appeared on the Swans' Time Is Money (Bastard) EP, credited for 'scream'. With her wordless background vocals coming in and out on the album's title cut, Jarboe expanded her presence on the follow-up full-length Greed. However, for the true markings of these so-called changes and transitions, we must look to Holy Money. Released a year before Children of God, Holy Money (and the A Screw EP) features the prominent use of acoustic instruments via the guitar and piano. With her range beginning to be explored here, from hauntingly soft to gospel/blues infused wails, Jarboe elegantly sings over a simple piano as on 'You Need Me' or the similarly designed 'Blackmail' (from A Screw, and reappearing on Children of God), one of Gira's most poignant love lyrics. This performance marks Jarboe's debut at lead vocal, and though all the lyrics would continue to remain Gira's, the vocal duties were now a shared responsibility.

Michael Gira has never been one to back away from uncomfortable topics in his music. As leader of Swans, his songs touch on power and corruption, violence, rape and sex, murder, slavery, and oppression. His lyrics reflect the mire of humanity's dark side, exposing truths and hypocrisies that far too many of us would rather pretend didn't exist. He does so with such authenticity and sincerity that it's as if he has been on both sides, the master and the servant; he has both wielded the sword and suffered its blade. That Gira would eventually shift his focus onto the institution of religion, one of the most corrupt, violent, and oppressive of man's creations, should be of no surprise.

People fear change' or more often, simply do not like it. With Jarboe's increased presence in the band, many in Swans' fanbase showed concern that the hard, explosive, and deafeningly obtuse band they had come to know and love might go soft. Perhaps to belay such ignorance (though I cannot imagine Gira placating anybody), Children of God opens with many of the familiar aspects of early Swans' songs: an explosive grinding guitar, bombastic, mindcrunching percussion, a tempo that trudges forward, and Gira's voice, that dark, heavy baritone that sends shivers down the spine. On the surface, 'New Mind' is very much in line with older material. But go under the surface a little and you begin to see subtle changes like call-and-response vocal arrangements and discernible lyrics that are not screamed, just directed very intently as when Gira yells, 'I am ready to receive the new mind' and the band reinforces the sentiment through repeating the phrase, 'I am ready'. Speaking to the corrupted mind, 'New Mind' is as shockingly direct as anything that came before, only a bit more refined and focused.

'Beautiful Child', perhaps the most brutal song on Children of God, begins with the pops and cracks of gunfire before proceeding to become a blood-drenched dirge backdropping a ritual human sacrifice. As Gira sings from the point of view of the one whose duty it is to sacrifice children, his words 'The beautiful child, I will kill the child'This is my life, this is my choice, this is my damnation', the fear is palpable. By the song's end, Gira is screaming 'This is my sacrifice', indicating not only the obvious sacrifice of the child, but also the sacrifice of his own soul.

Children of God ebbs and flows between the outwardly aggressive and the more reserved, yet equally disturbing. The presence of the acoustic guitar isn't necessarily new, but it's prevalence on Children of God certainly is. 'Our Love Lies' remains a relatively acoustic song with the addition of percussion, giving it that gothic feel that Nick Cave perfected in his earliest Bad Seeds' records. 'Real Love' takes the Cave-ism to another level, and perhaps hints at a more accessible Gira. 'You're Not Real, Girl' begins with a simple, repeated guitar phrase and an elegant layering of strings. Gira's hollowed timber and the achingly lonely lyrics leave you feeling as if you are the subject of his bitterness as he closes with 'You're not real, you're not real.'

The soft acoustic intro to Jarboe's 'In My Garden' is an immediate contrast to the album's opening barrage. In a manner akin to the Cocteau Twins/Harold Budd project, Jarboe's voice rises and falls over a steadily coasting guitar/piano coupling but never rises above an ambient state. This sentiment is revisited later in the album with the song 'Blackmail', perhaps the most angelically beautiful moment of the entire record, featuring Jarboe's achingly haunting vocals over a simple piano. In contrast to those delicate, almost gossamer arrangements, 'Blood and Honey' uses Jarboe's lower register. Arranged with chamber bells, minimal percussion, a darkly hollow echo, and Jarboe singing lyrics like 'I found you lying where I drowned you' and 'Our blood will flow black in the dirt and a black rose will grow where we laid', this song could provide the soundtrack to the film What Dreams May Come if Robin Williams was played by Diamanda Galas.

Jarboe is not quite the yin to Gira's yang as she doesn't necessarily provide balance. Many of her performances act as foil to Gira's abrasive aggression, helping to elevate the overall message and its delivery. With Children of God, Swans completed the turn towards a new phase in the band's development. A key album in the band's career, just as Holy Money hinted at the band's near future, Children of God would be the launch point towards more complex, adventurous, and ambitious endeavors.

Video: Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love ' 'Stinking of You'

Last year, director P. David Ebersole's Hole documentary Hit So Hard made its rounds in select theaters. While the focus is on former drummer Patty Schemel's struggles with fame and addiction, as Antiquiet points out, there is also a bevy of unreleased footage featuring Kurt Cobain and headline-grabbing Courtney Love as a couple. One such clip has surfaced online, namely a jumbled duet titled 'Stinking of You', which also features a young Pat Smear in the background. It's all vintage Cobain and sounds like half a dozen of his demos, though it's nice to see his humor eek out, especially when he asks, 'Is this a Genesis jam?' Check it out below.

Hit So Hard is currently available for download/rent via iTunes.

Coachella 2012 sets attendance record

The first weekend of Coachella 2012 not only sold out in record time, it also drew a record crowd. According to NBC Los Angeles, 80,000-85,000 people attended each of the festival's three days, up some 10,000 from last year (which was the previous record) and more than 20,000 from 2009. Question: Do holograms count as people?

As for weekend two, set times were revealed last night. Unfortunately, the festival will not webcast this weekend's performances, but video from last weekend remains archived on YouTube.

With a new contract with Warner Bros, LP is re-emerging as an artist. We caught up with her a few days before she headed to Austin, TX for the 2012 SXSW festival.

Album Review: La Sera ' Sees the Light

Image of Album Review: La Sera ' Sees the Light
Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls fame makes her return to her indie pop identity as La Sera, but this time around her sugary innocence comes with an edge. Sees the Light takes Goodman's syrupy vocals and turns them into irresistible tales of heartbreak pop. This isn't your average breakup album suited for sob sessions, but rather the independence and aggression that follow, when you realize, like Goodman herself, that things aren't so fragile after all.

Sees the Light ditches the brusque garage rock roots of Vivian Girls in favor of girl group-influenced pop, but a palpable aggression gives this sophomore effort an energy her debut lacked. Bits of hazy l0-fi support Goodman's silky soprano, stealing the show. Whether passive towards an ex on 'Love That's Gone' (admitting that she's 'better off alone now'), or questioning whether he remembers 'when you broke my heart' on 'I'm Alone', Goodman's soft-spoken vocals come across as direct as ever. From the swirling surf rock of 'I Can't Keep You In My Mind' to the fuzz drenched 'How Far We've Come', this female-fronted rock comes with an empowered force.

A release for the once aching heart, La Sera's surf rock is so sunny it wouldn't be out of place blasting from a beachside boombox. Goodman's airy falsetto is provided an alluring breeze on which to drift thanks to tropical strings and glossy drums on 'Real Boy', while the villainous 'Drive On' incorporates a twirling guitar line with a bubbly refrain to create delicious evil.

Navigating love might be hard for Goodman, but the heartbreak on Sees the Light brings it all together easily.

Essential Tracks: 'Please Be My Third Eye',  'Real Boy', and 'Drive On'

Coachella video highlights: Dr. Dre and Tupac, At The Drive-In, The Weeknd

Day three of weekend one of Coachella 2012 is in the books, and you can replay Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's entire headlining performance below. The rumors proved true as the guest-heavy set featured appearances by Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Warren G, and holograms of Tupac (!) and Nate Dogg.

The career-spanning setlist kicked off with 'The New Episode', 'Gin N Juice, and 'Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang'. Nate Dogg's hologram then appeared for 'Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)', Kendrick Lamar performed his new Dre-aided single 'The Recipe', and Wiz Khalifa teamed up with Snoop on 'Young Wild and Free'. Later, 50 Cent came on stage for 'What Up Gangsta', 'P.I.M.P', and 'In the Club' and Eminem aided Dr. Dre on 'I Need A Doctor' before dishing out his own 'Forget About Dre', and 'Till I Collapse'. What proved to be the evening's biggest highlight, Tupac's hologram appeared for 'Hail Mary' and '2 of Amerika'z Most Wanted'.

Also streaming in full below, The Weeknd's Coachella set drew from all three of his mixtapes and also featured a rendition of Drake's 'Crew Love'.

Finally, watch a clip of reunited hardcore band At The Drive-In performing 'One Armed Scissor'. We'll edit in their full performance if and when it pops up.

Last night, late night TV was chock full of big name talent making their way to Coachella. Arctic Monkeys appeared on Conan, where they performed their new single, 'R U Mine?'. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Shins showcased 'Simple Song' and 'The Rifle's Spiral' from their recently released LP, Port of Morrow. (They also took some time to film a Coachella survival guide.) Leslie Feist tackled Metals's 'The Bad in Each Other' on Leno. And, over on Letterman, Alabama Shakes ripped through 'Hold On' from their debut LP, Boys & Girls. Watch video replays of all four performances below, courtesy of The Audio Perv.

Tupac's hologram to appear at Coachella, too

Image of Tupac's hologram to appear at Coachella, too

This is getting insane: According to Los Angeles radio station KROQ, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's Coachella performance will feature holograms of not one, but two deceased hip-hop acts. In addition to Nate Dogg, Tupac will reportedly appear in hologram form in order to join Dr. Dre for a performance of 'California Love'.

KROQ and TMZ both report that the holograms will be produced by the same company that broadcast Mariah Carey's image simultaneously across five stages last year.

As previously reported, Dre and Snoop Dogg's set is also rumored to feature many living guests, including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Warren G, Kurupt, and Dillinger. RollingStone.com reports that Wiz Khalifa will also make an appearance.
